埃米莉·狄更生，1830年出生於美國馬薩諸塞州阿默的一個律師家庭。她青少年時代的生活單調而平靜，從小接受正規宗教教育。狄金森的父親希望他的孩子們能接受好的教育，而她的母親是冷漠的。埃米莉極其信賴她的哥哥奧斯丁，在一封給她寫給知己的信中說“在孩提時代，當發生事情時，我經常跑回家找奧斯丁。儘管他是一個不稱職的'母親'，但是我喜歡他勝過任何一個。”
狄更生年輕時曾隨家人到費城、華盛頓等地探親，17歲進入女子大學。她在學院求學七年，課程包括英語和古典文學、拉丁語、植物學、地質學、歷史、“精神哲學”及算術。從二25歲起，狄更生棄絕社交閉門不出，在孤獨中埋頭寫詩三十年，留下詩稿一千八百餘首。
1860到1865這幾年，是狄更生創作力最旺盛的時期，同時開始隱居，有時甚至拒見來客。對時事坦白地缺乏興趣，包括美國內戰。隱居後，狄更生依然跟許多人通信，在寫詩、管家之餘，精神上並不孤單。1862年，寫信給當時著名的雜誌編輯希金生(Thomas W. Higginson)，請他品評自己的詩作。希金生看到狄更生的天才，但由於她的詩風異於同時，始終沒有鼓勵她出版。雖然狄更生沒有正式出版她的詩，但常在書信中附上詩歌，令其詩開始在親友中流傳。
埃米莉跟妹妹文妮一樣，終生未婚，替多病的母親管理家事。55歲病逝，據診斷是死於叫做布賴特氏病的一種腎病。
狄更生死後，文妮發現姐姐留下的詩歌（共有40本詩稿，以及若干散軼的手稿）。密友兼嫂子蘇珊嘗試助她整理出版，不果。最終手稿落在奧斯丁的情婦托德(Mabel Loomis Todd)手上，她與希金生最終合力讓狄更生的詩歌面世。後來，狄更生的侄女瑪撒(Martha Dickinson Bianchi)，即蘇珊的女兒，也出版了狄更生的部分詩歌與書信。1955年，首部未經竄改的狄更生全集出版，引起文學界的關注，開始對其人其詩作全新的評估。
